Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF), the country's highest court, ordered the freezing of a mansion on Ilha Comprida, in Angra dos Reis, a coastal city in Rio de Janeiro state. The property is now at the center of a legal fight between Richarlison, a striker on Brazil's national soccer team, and lawyer Willer Tomaz.
Moraes' order of October 26
Moraes' order was entered in the Central de Indisponibilidade de Bens, a national registry of frozen assets, on October 26. In practice, the assets of WT Administração de Imóveis e Bens, a company owned by Tomaz, were locked. The mansion is among them.
The measure was taken within an investigation opened against the lawyer. The source material does not detail the subject of that inquiry.
Who owns the Angra dos Reis mansion?
In the official records, the owner is WT Administração. Richarlison disagrees and says he is the true owner of the property. According to the player, he invested about R$ 10 million (Brazilian reais) in the house over the years.
The striker's account begins in 2020. He says the house was acquired that year by Sport 70, a company linked to his former business representative Renato Velasco. In 2022, a court decision transferred possession of the property to the company run by Tomaz. That is where the conflict that has now reached the STF began.
One property, two versions
On one side is a multimillion-reais property registered in a company's name. On the other is a Brazil national team player who says he paid for the construction work and does not accept having been left out of the title. Between them stand a court decision that changed hands and a freeze that leaves everything on hold.
What happens next depends on how the investigation against the lawyer proceeds and on the ownership dispute. While the case moves forward, the mansion remains unavailable. Neither the player's version nor the documentation in the company's name has been confirmed beyond what appears in the court records cited.
Why it matters
The case puts a Brazilian sports star, a private lawyer and one of the Supreme Court's most prominent justices in the same dispute over a luxury asset. It also shows how a freeze order issued in one investigation can lock an entire company's assets while a separate ownership fight remains unresolved.
VDD Analysis
When a high-value asset is stuck between a dispute among private parties and an investigation, legal certainty is what suffers. Citizens need to know clearly who owns what they bought and for how long their property can be frozen. Without predictable rules and reliable records, investors think twice before betting on Brazil.
