Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has opened a new front in his clash with the country's largest television network. In an official statement published this week, he accuses Rede Globo of backing out of an exclusive interview and of preparing a report about him for its Sunday newsmagazine Fantástico without giving him a right of reply.
The condition that stalled the deal, according to Flávio
According to the senator, he agreed to take part in the interview but set one condition: that it be aired in full, with no cuts and no forbidden topics. That, he says, is when the network chose not to go ahead with what had been agreed.
Flávio blames the retreat on “fear.” He also questions Globo's moral standing to judge him or try to “destroy his reputation” if it airs the report without hearing him on the terms he proposed.
“Seven minutes” after the result
The statement goes beyond the dispute with the broadcaster. The senator criticized court measures taken right after the elections. By his account, just seven minutes after the official result, a decision imposing precautionary measures against him was issued. Twelve hours later, he says, he was served a summons on the street as he left the residence of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Flávio also recalled his father's situation. He cited Jair Bolsonaro's health conditions and his sentence of more than 27 years in prison. He also mentioned that another of his brothers has been sidelined from his duties for more than a year and a half. In the senator's view, the scenario is unjust and far from an impartial process.
Abroad, and promising to speak “without filter”
Currently outside Brazil, the lawmaker announced conversations with major Brazilian and international news outlets in the coming days, “no cuts, no filter.” He said he is in a place where he can speak freely and that he will share content that, in his words, would be impossible to state inside Brazil.
The statement does not say which outlets will interview him or when the conversations will be published. It also contains no response from Globo to the accusations. What remains to be seen is whether the network will keep the Fantástico report and whether it will make room for the senator's side, on the terms he says he demanded.
Why it matters
Flávio Bolsonaro is a senator and the son of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil's president from 2019 to 2022. Globo is Brazil's biggest TV network, and the Bolsonaro family and the Brazilian right have long complained about how it covers them. The dispute over the interview adds a media front to the legal and political pressure the senator says he is under.
VDD Analysis
Flávio's demand is simple and reasonable: to be shown in full, without selective editing. When a broadcaster with Globo's reach prepares a report on a senator, the right of reply should be the bare minimum. It is up to the network to explain why the interview did not happen. Until it does, the notion that the public will see only one side of the story feeds the distrust that millions of Brazilians feel toward the mainstream press.
